Additionally, each lab has 20 student workstations, one scanner, a black & white laser printer, and one color laser printer accessible from both labs (located in the PC lab).Headphones and microphones are available for checkout during class.

Standard Software
CDH has a wide variety of software offerings. Users may access MS Office, Bruin Online suite, Ecampus, Adobe, e-mail, internet, printing and many other software packages. For the most current and complete information including software versions, please visit the campus computer lab web site: http://www.computerlabs.ucla.edu. If you find problems with any of these programs, please tell a lab consultant or email cdhlabs@humnet.ucla.edu.

Instructional Software
Specialized instructional software is available in the classrooms and also in the drop-in lab. For the most current information, please visit the campus computer lab web site at: http://www.computerlabs.ucla.edu. If you are interested in requesting instructional software, contact Linda Holmes, Lab Manager at (310) 206-5630 or email cdhlabs@humnet.ucla.edu.

For Faculty Reserving a Classroom
CDH classrooms offer priority to Humanities classes. Instructors interested in reserving a classroom should contact cdhlabs@humnet.ucla.edu or utilize our Reservation Form.

Student Requirements
All students must have a UCLA Logoin ID and pay for their own printing. Print accounts are available at CDH and only need to be set up once. Printing is 10¢/page for black and white, and 40¢/page for color laser.

Logging In
The computer will prompt you for your UCLA Logon ID and your password. Your password is the password used to check your UCLA e-mail. If you have problems logging in, please ask a lab consultant to help out.

Forgot Your Password?
If you have any problems with your UCLA Logon ID, please go to BOL Help Desk at 4302 MSA and bring your picture ID. Sorry, we can't look up or change passwords here at CDH.

Logging Out
Always log out of your computer when you leave. Since you logged in with your BOLid and password, if you don't log off, the next person to use the computer will have full access to your UCLA identity AND will be able to make printouts that you'll get charged for.

TIP: Always wait for the login screen to come back to verify that you're completely logged out.

Temporary Accounts
Students should have their own UCLA accounts, but temporary ones are available during the class time so everyone can participate. However, temporary ids do not allow the user to print.

Equipment Maintenance
If any problems are encountered with software and/or hardware while using the lab, notify the lab consultant on duty. They can usually fix the problem. If they cannot resolve the problem they will notify the Technical Lab Coordinator. If the problem can't be fixed for your class we will be sure to do everything we can to resolve the problem for your next class meeting.

Printing
Two high-speed black/white laser printers and one color-laser printer are available in the labs. A print account is required to print at CDH labs — cash is not accepted. Printing is 10¢ per sheet black and white; 40¢ per sheet color. CDH Lab Consultants will help you set up your print account, all you will need is your Bruin Card. Printing is billed directly to your BAR account every quarter.

What You Need
In order to print at CDH Labs, you'll need a valid UCLA Logon ID, and you'll also need to set up a print account with us. If you already have your UCLA Logon, setting up a print account takes only minutes. Just see the lab consultant on duty (during drop-in hours only) and show us your current student ID.

By setting up a print account, you are authorizing us to bill you for the printouts you make here. We will bill you quarterly for your printouts, and your charges should appear on the same bills with your other UCLA charges such as tuition, etc.

Note: If you already have a print account set up in the CLICC or ATS labs, you do not need to set up an account with CDH Labs.

Definitions and Rules
You are charged for every piece of paper that comes out with your print job, except the system-generated cover page. Since the charging process is invisible to you, be aware that you are charged for every sheet of paper, regardless of the amount of print on it. If the sheet of paper is blank, or has one character on it, it still counts as a sheet and you're charged the full 10 cents. There is no allowance for partial pages.

Also be aware that you are charged for printouts even if you don't come pick them up. We recycle abandoned printouts every Friday at closing time.

What's Available
Each lab has one high speed black/white laser printer available, and one high speed color laser printer is also available for printing from both labs. This printer is located in the PC lab, room B88.

How it Works

  1. You submit your print request through your word processor, spreadsheet, email program, telnet session, Netscape session, or other application.
  2. When you submit a print request from any application it goes to a general queue where it waits to be printed. Depending on how many people are printing and how busy the printers are, you may have to wait a little while for your printouts.
  3. Once your job has cleared the queue and the system recognizes it as having printed, the charge for the number of sheets you printed is charged to your BAR account and you will be billed quarterly for your printing.
  4. We post the bills once a quarter for the previous quarter's printing activity. Sometimes the cut-off dates don't coincide with the quarter ending, so the bills may sometimes reflect printing that you did two quarters prior. You can check your balance once it's posted by looking at the URSA Online web site: http://www.ursa.ucla.edu
  5. To get a list of current printing activity and charges, ask a lab consultant, or send an email to cliccbar@ucla.edu.

Tips for Smart Printing (or, how not to rack up printing bills for wasted print-outs)

  • Use the Print Preview feature whenever it's available.
  • Check the size of any web sites you decide to print.
  • Use your mouse to select text and print only that selection.
  • Choose the "print screen" option from Melvyl or Orion, NOT the "print entire scrollback" option.
  • If your printout doesn't seem to go through the first time, check with a consultant rather than just trying to print again. This will save you the expense of printing two jobs instead of one.

Requesting A Refund
From time to time, you may get a printout that's faulty or of bad quality due to printer or system error. These qualify for a refund:

  • Low toner, or smudged output
  • Printer crinkling or tearing the pages (due to a paper jam or otherwise)
  • System or printer error

However, if you just don't like the look of what you printed, or want to change the margins, that's not a system problem and does not qualify for a refund. A consultant will help you determine if it's a system problem or not.

You are responsible for your own printing charges, and knowing what the printing policies are. In order to process a refund, fill out a Printing Refund Form located at the consultants' counter. No instant refunds are offered. Please keep the pink Printing Refund Form copy for future verification. All refunds must be requested on the day of the undesirable print job. No other refund requests will be accepted. If you have any questions, please contact the lab consultant.

Billing Inquiries
With the use of an active UCLA Logon ID and printing account, all CDH Lab print jobs will be billed to your BAR account on a quarterly basis. Please make a note that there are four billing periods consisting of Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer quarter. A printing fee will be charged to you ONLY if there has been any print job(s) made through your UCLA Logon. The charge per billing period will consist of the total amount of pages you have printed throughout that particular period, excluding the system generated cover sheet. All refunds will ONLY be processed if you have requested a refund on the day of the undesirable print job. If you have any questions regarding the billing process, please ask any CDH Lab consultant. For further inquiries regarding your bill, please leave a message at (310) 206-7820 or email cliccbar@ucla.edu.

Saving Files
You will need a high-density floppy diskette or Zip cartridge if you want to save your work and take it away with you. We recommend getting diskettes and Zip cartridges in economy packs from a retail store.

Viruses? Diskette Problems?
As a general-use computing lab, we run across our share of viruses and file problems. We keep the latest versions of anti-virus software available to help alleviate computer virus infections. Ask a lab consultant to help you if you suspect that youÕve encountered a computer virus. We can also help diagnose some diskette problems; however, we may not be able to recover everything from a faulty diskette, and we rely on you to make sure you have backed up your important work.

If you have any questions or concerns, please ask a lab consultant!
