About CDH Labs
The Computer Labs operated by the Center for Digital Humanities are intended to provide computing resources for the members of the Humanities community to engage in academic pursuits, fulfill course assignments and communicate with instructors and peers.

Who Can Use CDH Labs?
Anyone with a current UCLA Logon ID may use CDH Labs. A UCLA Logon ID is available at no cost to all current UCLA students, staff and faculty. You may set one up here if you don't have one already. Your UCLA Logon ID is the first part of your e-mail address. For example, "jbruin@ucla.edu" is the email address and "jbruin" is the BOLid.

Non-UCLA Organizations
The CDH classrooms are available to organizations not affiliated with UCLA on a fee basis.

Location
CDH Labs are located in LuValle Commons on the lower level. The PC lab is in room B01A and the Macintosh lab is room B01B.

Classroom Accessories
Each classroom is equipped with an instructor station integrated into a lecturn which houses a laptop hook-up, multi-system VCR, and a code-free DVD player, all connecting to a projection system. The PC Lab has 26 student workstations, one scanner, a black & white laser printer, and one color laser printer accessible from both labs. Headphones and microphones are aslo provided. Additionally, we have a smaller room which offers mutltiple desk configurations and Mac PowerBooks for a more intimate meeting space for group work or smaller classes.

For Faculty Reserving a Classroom
CDH classrooms offer priority to Humanities classes. Instructors interested in reserving a classroom should contact cdhlabs@humnet.ucla.edu or utilize our Reservation Form.

How the Labs Can Be Used: Many instructors as well as TA's have used the labs in a variety of ways.

  • Weekly class instruction. It can be on either one or all your scheduled session days.
  • Office hours. This gives the student the opportunity to work on assignments with you right there for immediate help.
  • Instructional lab. Gives the student a set time to do assignments.
  • Utilize the code-free DVD player or multi-system VCR player to show your class movie clips relevant to instruction.
  • Ecampus Demos. This session just shows your students how to use E-Campus. This gets them started, and gives you a chance to point out specific areas that they should concentrate on. If you are not comfortable doing this demo on your own you can e-mail ecampus@humnet.ucla.edu to enquire about instructor availability.

Reservation Policy: We will send out a "Reservation Request" letter for the following quarter, to all faculty during the 7th week of the quarter. All reservation requests that we receive will be prioritized according to the date and time in which they were received. We will not accept reservations before the 7th week but we WILL continue to accept reservations after 10th week. All requests received after the 10th week may have a harder time getting the date and time requested due to the demand for the labs. For non-humanities classes there will be a fee charged for the use of our labs.

Software Policy: If you are planning on using software that CDH does not have, or if you need to upgrade existing software, you will need to provide us with the program at least three weeks prior to the first class session. The CDH labs uses this time to install the software, test it, resolve any incompatibilities with other installed software, and, when appropriate, validate the software license with the manufacturer. It also gives the instructor time to test the software before it is used in class. Software and data sets used for the class should be requested at the time of the classroom reservation, or at least three weeks prior to the first class. Last minute software requests are handled on the basis of staff availability.

Cancellation Policy: Due to the high demand for computing labs by instructors and students, the following cancellation policy has been instituted at CDH Labs. If you need to change or cancel your reservation, please contact the CDH Lab Office (email cdhlabs@humnet.ucla.edu Or call 20-65630) at least two business days prior to your scheduled class. If your class does not use the lab reservation twice within a quarter without notifying lab management, your class's reservations for the remainder of the quarter will be cancelled. You will receive notification of this. Thereafter during that quarter, we will only be able to schedule the lab for your class on a week-by-week basis, within seven calendar days of the reservation date requested. Your reservation would also be subject to lab availability. Your cooperation in reserving the lab for only those days when you intend to use it will allow us to better serve all Humanities classes and students.

Opening the Lab: CDH will arrange for the lab to be opened approximately 5 minutes before the scheduled time. A lab consultant will wait for the instructor to arrive for an additional 15 minutes. If no one shows up within that time, the lab may be closed, or alternately opened for drop-in use.

Equipment Maintenance: If any problems are encountered with software and/or hardware while using the lab, notify the lab consultant on duty. They can usually fix the problem. If they cannot resolve the problem they will notify the Technical Lab Coordinator. If the problem can't be fixed for your class we will be sure to do everything we can to resolve the problem for your next class meeting.

Lab Cleanliness: Absolutely no food or drinks are allowed in the lab at any time. Any cleanup of spills or damage caused to the equipment, due to food or drinks will be charged to the department using the lab. All trash and paper must be disposed of. Chairs must be pushed in and all computers and monitors must be shut down properly. There will usually be a class waiting to use the lab after you, so please leave it usable for the next class.

E-Campus
Each undergraduate course offered in the Humanities has a class website where students can receive information specific to the course - class meeting times, instructor information, class syllabus (when provided by instructor), etc.

For more information about E-Campus, please consult the E-Campus help page at: http://www.humnet.ucla.edu/itc/ecampushelp.

Drop-In Usage
When classes are not scheduled. You can view the daily schedule online.

Extension Students
University Extension students concurrently enrolled in a UCLA course qualify for a temporary UCLA Logon ID. To obtain their UCLA Logon ID, the student will need to go to the BOL Help Desk at Kerckhoff Hall, Suite 124 and present a picture ID and a copy of their UNEX receipt indicating that this is a Concurrent Enrollment Course.

Note: This UCLA Logon ID expires at the end of the course.

Logging In
The computer will prompt you for your UCLA Logon ID and your password. Your password is the password used to check your Bruin Online e-mail. If you have problems logging in, please ask a lab consultant to help out.

Forgot Your Password?
If you have any problems with your UCLA Logon ID, please go to BOL Help Desk at Kerckhoff Hall, Suite 124 and bring your picture ID. Sorry, we can't look up or change passwords here at CDH.

Logging Out
Always log out of your computer when you leave. Since you logged in with your BOLid and password, if you don't log off, the next person to use the computer will have full access to your UCLA Logon identity AND will be able to make printouts that you'll get charged for.

TIP: Always wait for the login screen to come back to verify that you're completely logged out.

Temporary Accounts
Students should have their own UCLA Logon ID, but temporary ones are available during the class time so everyone can participate. However, temporary ids do not allow the user to print.

Printing
Two high-speed black/white laser printers and one color-laser printer are available in the labs. A print account is required to print at CDH labs — cash is not accepted. Printing is 10¢ per sheet black and white; 40¢ per sheet color. CDH Lab Consultants will help you set up your print account, all you will need is your Bruin Card. Printing is billed directly to your BAR account every quarter. We will be applying a $10 credit to everyone who prints at CDH for the Fall Quarter 2006. At this time it’s regardless of major.
The CDH print credit is separate from all other labs on campus. CDH will be submitting our quarterly billing to all students bar accounts the week of December 18-22.

Students will be able to log on and view their CDH credit at my.clicc.ucla.edu (we share the billing process with the CLICC Labs). The credit will apply to print jobs made this quarter only (it won't roll over like a pre-pay account). CLICC is not issuing any print credits and this will not affect any jobs printed at any CLICC classroom or lab.

This is our first attempt at issuing credit for printing and we will be evaluating the process over the next quarter. CDH plans on issuing the $10.00 again in the Winter Quarter 2007 but we have not made any definitive plans past that date. Please understand this is a pilot program and the specifics are subject to change as we proceed.

What You Need
In order to print at CDH Labs, you'll need a valid UCLA Logon ID, and you'll also need to set up a print account with us. If you already have your UCLA Logon ID, setting up a print account takes only minutes. Just see the lab consultant on duty (during drop-in hours only) and show us your current student ID.

By setting up a print account, you are authorizing us to bill you for the printouts you make here. We will bill you quarterly for your printouts, and your charges should appear on the same bills with your other UCLA charges such as tuition, etc.

Note: If you already have a print account set up in the CLICC or ATS labs, you do not need to set up an account with CDH Labs.

Definitions and Rules
You are charged for every piece of paper that comes out with your print job, except the system-generated cover page. Since the charging process is invisible to you, be aware that you are charged for every sheet of paper, regardless of the amount of print on it. If the sheet of paper is blank, or has one character on it, it still counts as a sheet and you're charged the full 10 cents. There is no allowance for partial pages.

Also be aware that you are charged for printouts even if you don't come pick them up. We recycle abandoned printouts every Friday at closing time.

What's Available
Each lab has a high speed black and white printer. There is one color printer l
ocated in the PC lab, room B88.

Cost
Black & White:   10¢/page
Color laser:      40¢/page

Tips for Smart Printing (or, how not to rack up printing bills for wasted print-outs)

  • Use the Print Preview feature whenever it's available.
  • Check the size of any web sites you decide to print.
  • Use your mouse to select text and print only that selection.
  • Choose the "print screen" option from Melvyl or Orion, NOT the "print entire scrollback" option.
  • If your printout doesn't seem to go through the first time, check with a consultant rather than just trying to print again. This will save you the expense of printing two jobs instead of one.

Requesting A Refund
From time to time, you may get a printout that's faulty or of bad quality due to printer or system error. These qualify for a refund:

  • Low toner, or smudged output
  • Printer crinkling or tearing the pages (due to a paper jam or otherwise)
  • System or printer error

However, if you just don't like the look of what you printed, or want to change the margins, that's not a system problem and does not qualify for a refund. A consultant will help you determine if it's a system problem or not.

You are responsible for your own printing charges, and knowing what the printing policies are. In order to process a refund, fill out a Printing Refund Form located at the consultants' counter. No instant refunds are offered. Please keep the pink Printing Refund Form copy for future verification. All refunds must be requested on the day of the undesirable print job. No other refund requests will be accepted. If you have any questions, please contact the lab consultant.

Billing Inquiries
With the use of an active UCLA Logon ID and printing account, all CDH Lab print jobs will be billed to your BAR account on a quarterly basis. Please make a note that there are four billing periods consisting of Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer quarter. A printing fee will be charged to you ONLY if there has been any print job(s) made through your BOL login. The charge per billing period will consist of the total amount of pages you have printed throughout that particular period, excluding the system generated cover sheet. All refunds will ONLY be processed if you have requested a refund on the day of the undesirable print job. If you have any questions regarding the billing process, please ask any CDH Lab consultant. For further inquiries regarding your bill, please leave a message at (310) 206-7820 or email cliccbar@ucla.edu.

  5. Be aware of the copyright restrictions of the materials you copy or scan. This includes software and files you download. Software at CDH is licensed and cannot be copied.
  6. Do not scan and manipulate government documents such as your driver's license, or cash. This is a felony.
